The Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations for Wales:
- Children under the age of 15 should not be allowed to drink alcohol. The evidence shows that alcohol use in children under this age can have negative effects on growth and development.
- Drinking at or over the age of 15 can still be risky. Binge drinking especially puts young people at risk of negative health effects, injuries and more.
- Parental alcohol use can have an influence on children’s behaviour. If parents and carers use alcohol responsibly, set clear rules for their children and supervise them if they drink, it can help protect them against alcohol misuse.
